So Grateful for This Guy’s Songwriting and Singing

Bill Withers (1938–2020).

He had a slightly unconventional career and I’m grateful for the way he ignored pop conventions in much of his songwriting. When you don’t sound like anyone else, you know you’re probably doing something right.

I’m still amazed at how he can hold that note in “Lovely Day” which would be a shout were it not sandwiched perfectly in that gorgeous composition. I believe his music transcends generational differences and vogues. I think his songs will still be covered far into the future.
