Fairy Tale

Every morning, the world returns.
There is that magical moment of confusion
before consciousness, I could be anything,
a starfish, a barred owl, a snowstorm

chasing children into a barn
where they clasp hands in the blue dark
and giggle that the world could end
so suddenly, so stupidly, but it won’t.

Everyone serious knows this is forever.
