It was only after it was done that I realized it might be a little nod to M.C. Escher, whose work I consider a perennial delight. I love his idea…

My love always loved fireflies.

So when she was told her days were few,
what harm would come if I tinkered
in her dying form?

I did it to please her.

Her genes code now for luciferase
and she glows to herself
in her bed, the soft warm
